See Them Die by Michael Fowler
Published by Saphere Books, See Them Die by Michael Fowler has restored my faith in the police procedural / crime thriller genre.
Turns out the author is a former police officer who has written books in another series, but this is the first book I’ve read by him.
The first three pages got me totally invested in this well put together story.
Dr Mottrell was accused of murdering his wife, unborn child, and in-laws and found unconscious at the scene with his wrists slashed in an apparent murder-suicide three years before.
Having never been cleared by the police, Dr Mottrell comes across a similar case and contacts the police, convinced the killer of his family has struck again.
The story rolls along with a fast clip and, since this is the first book in a series, the characters are introduced and developed well. Even halfway through the book, I was suspicious about Dr Mottrell and whether he was totally innocent.
The fact he lives out in the back and beyond in a cabin adds that another dimension to the story (we all know what happens if you live alone in the woods!).
There were two things I felt not quite right (no spoilers) in See Them Die by Michael Fowler. The first is Dr Mottrell is allowed into crime scenes despite never being formally cleared of murder.
The second being the app he has and no one else. If you read the book, you’ll know what I mean – I don’t want to give away too much.
I enjoyed reading See Them Die by Michael Fowler and can’t wait to read the next in the series – it’s out in a few months and I’ve got my order in. I also purchased two other books from another series by Michael Fowler based on the strength of See Them Die.
