I know this is going to come across poorly to the many authors who write police procedural fiction, but it’s much more believable if the writer is currently or formerly law enforcement themselves.
Maldonada was in fact a former FBI agent herself with a distinguished career and has written a good twisty page turner in The Cipher.
I found the premise to be unbelievable at first but was slowly won over as the book progressed. It also took me a while to slide in and maintain interest in the story – about 30% on the Kindle.
This is not your standard FBI yarn and there were many times when what appeared to be predictable, turned out to be the opposite. 4/5
