It was only during the reading of this book did I realise I had disrupted the series order. Unless you’re a series purist, this will not matter as In The Clearing is a solid standalone read.
This time there are two cases. The first case is the murder inside a family home and the second, a cold case involving a young student found dead in a river forty years before.
The trouble with two cases within the same story is, inevitably, one will have a bigger focus than the other. I liked the cold case story better especially how the clues were tracked down and unravelled. The characters and settings were rich in detail as were the conflicts.
But I felt disconnected to the first case and didn’t have so much vested interest in how that turned out. The best is 1.5/5.
